I love “Seinfeld.” As for the actual comedian Jerry Seinfeld, however it’s…complicated. In most of his activities outside his eponymous classic sitcom (1989-1998), Seinfeld bemuses more than amuses me. This ambivalence only obliquely affects my opinion of “Unfrosted,” Seinfeld’s recently-released feature-length Netflix comedy. Still, I’ve always had the disquieting sense of Seinfeld somehow always Getting Away With Something when he pulls off this suave, impeccably creased act. Seinfeld isn’t about unsettling his viewers and I’m in no way suggesting he should be.

Donald Trump complained Wednesday that his lawyers were not given "unlimited" chances to reject prospective jurors at his New York criminal hush money trial. Trump suggested that New York City, which leans heavily Democratic, is only better than Washington, D.C. Trump also faces criminal election interference charges in federal court in Washington. Trials for Class E felonies, which include the charges of falsifying business records that Trump faces, get the fewest number of challenges. Trump's complaint on Truth Social demonstrates "his willful ignorance of the law," said Jeremy Saland, another New York criminal defense attorney. Trump's lawyers and prosecutors can make an unlimited number of requests to Judge Juan Merchan to strike a potential juror for cause.

Years before becoming House speaker, Republican Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana played a leading role aiding Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election. That history will be on display Friday, with Johnson set to deliver remarks alongside the former president about “election integrity” – a phrase Trump often uses to describe the lie that the 2020 election was rigged and unfounded concerns about future mass voter fraud. Johnson carved out an influential role after the 2020 election, helping Trump’s attempts to subvert the will of the people and overturn the legitimate results. He later recruited a majority of House Republicans to endorse a Trump-backed lawsuit seeking to invalidate the results from four key states that Trump lost: Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan and Wisconsin. (In truth, as the Supreme Court later affirmed, judges have the power to review state election laws.)

Trump has floated a 10% across-the-board tariff on imports, a 60% tariff on imports from China and a 100% tariff on foreign cars – including from Mexico. Trump’s proposals, if enacted, could easily set off a new trade war with China and potentially other nations, too. Some economists are warning Trump’s trade agenda and the ensuing retaliation from trading partners would hurt the US economy by worsening inflation, killing jobs, depressing growth and spooking investors. It’s hard to say exactly because there is a lot of uncertainty over how much of Trump’s proposed agenda would actually be enacted. That’s because tariffs tax imports when they come ashore, adding costs for US distributors, retailers and, ultimately consumers.

If you had the opportunity to hear activist investor Nelson Peltz, the defeated candidate for the Disney board, you did not get a definitive answer, as much as I pressed. In my CNBC interview with Peltz on Thursday, he assured us that he would be back if Iger didn't deliver on his promises. Iger talked about the board's succession committee, which former Morgan Stanley CEO James Gorman and now Disney board member, is on. In late 2023, when OpenAI sought $300 million from investors, CEO Sam Altman chose a different approach. "They're trying to deprive him of his cash, they want to bankrupt him, they want to hurt him so badly," Eric Trump told Fox News in an interview. Trump's son Eric, a co-defendant in the fraud case, accused Attorney General Letitia James on Sunday of trying to bankrupt his father with the judgment. Noem is also facing a new lawsuit, filed by the consumer advocacy group Travelers United, accusing Noem of doing an “undisclosed advertisement” for Smile Texas. Rick Kline and Bret Davis, a pair of dentists at Smile Texas, have, according to federal records, donated to Republican candidates and, in Kline’s case, the Texas state GOP. Davis, in a post to the Smile Texas Instagram account, used some of the video of Noem and wrote, “This gracious leading lady @kristinoem just received an executive, feminine, beautiful smile here at Smile Texas.” Neither is on record donating to Noem. The outcome could involve hefty settlements that employers are compelled to cough up to employees who brought workplace-related lawsuits against them. "That is easy, easy money" for the employee, Zambrano, who is suing the musicians Lizzo and Ye (formerly known as Kanye West), on behalf of ex-employees, said. Having an under-trained human resources department could pose major legal troubles for a company, added David Gottlieb, a partner at the New York City-based employment law firm, Wigdor LLP. If a case has some merit, employers will "absolutely" offer money to an employee pursuing legal action, continued Zambrano. Balcony staterooms come with too many caveats to justify the higher price, so I opt for staterooms with portholes instead. My family prefers a porthole stateroom to a balcony stateroom. I've found that balcony seating is rarely as spacious as the lounge chairs elsewhere on the ship. But the lack of space is just one of my gripes with balcony staterooms. Besides, the ship has plenty to explore, so get out of your room and enjoy everything your cruise has to offer.

How the U.S. courted the Philippines to thwart China
  + stars: | 2023-11-29 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +14 min
What followed was two trips to the United States in less than a year for Marcos, and visits to the Philippines by high-ranking Biden administration officials. Marcos’ predecessor, the populist firebrand Rodrigo Duterte, was openly hostile to the United States and attempted to bring his country closer to communist China during his six-year term. For the United States, cementing alliances in the Asia-Pacific region is likewise crucial to keeping China in check. China’s Foreign Ministry, in a statement to Reuters, characterized China and the Philippines as “close neighbors across the sea” with a common interest in friendship. At the time, he said the cancellation of his visa was the latest in a list of “gripes and disrespect” by the United States.

Joe Biden versus Donald Trump is not the choice America wants. And while 60 percent of voters don’t want to put Trump back in the White House, 65 percent don’t want to hand Biden a second term, either. The one thing on which Americans seem to agree is that we find a Biden-Trump 2024 rematch entirely disagreeable. A contest between Biden and Trump would compel Americans to either reaffirm or discard basic democratic and governing principles. More so than any other pairing, Biden versus Trump forces us to decide, or at least to clarify, who we think we are and what we strive to be.
